Sub Tanks
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
Numerous hidden "tanks" are scattered throughout the game, serving different purposes to help your progress along the way. Energy and Weapon Tanks refill your Life/Weapon Energy when needed, and the EXE Tank increases the total amount of lives available to your character when you start the game.
Heart Tanks
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
Heart tanks are found in every Megaman X game and provide your character with a permanent boost in total energy. There are eight attainable heart tanks, one for each level of the eight maverick bosses. Complete listings for locations and how to obtain them are described below:
Jungle stage
This heart tank can be found in area 2 inside one of the wood parts in the mechanical trees. You need Ryuenjin or Rising Fire to burn the tree. The specific tree is right under one of the electric webs; to the right of the pit (the pit does have the “crosswalks” over it but you get the point hopefully). Just use the attack and jump up to it.
Cyber Space stage
To obtain this heart tank you simply need to earn an “S” class ranking on the 2nd part of area 1 in Cyber Space. This challenge is made much easier by first obtaining Kuuenbu/Kuuenzan or Soul Body, as they can destroy the yellow spheres that get in your way.
Air Force stage
This heart tank is found on the platform under the first spaceship that shoots the huge blast and destroys it if you aren’t quick enough. Simple enough to get, you just need to be fast enough to get there and grab it before the platform is destroyed.
Volcano stage
Found in area 2 of the Volcano. After you reach the part where you first run into an enemy ride armor, look to your left to see a cliff. It’s possible to reach the cliff by sliding down the wall below and making a very skilled jump up and around to reach the ledge, but it requires a lot of patience to get just right. Otherwise, obtain Kuuenbu (with Zero, use the double jump to jump first outwards and then up and over the ledge) or Lightning Web (with X, shoot from the wall and use as a second to jump back over) to jump from the wall below. Otherwise, use X’s Nova Strike or even Lightning Web to jump from the other ledge on the right to reach it.
Marine Base stage
Pretty simple to obtain but requires some skillful maneuvering. Halfway through the first part of the stage the ground will drop out and you should be able to see just far enough ahead to find another level below, but with a green platform over it. Just jump right before the end of the ledge and pull back in the air, and then push forward to the right again to land right on the lower level.
Bio Lab stage
After finishing the second stairway part and teleporting, you should be able to see the heart tank overhead with a mechanaloid drill next to it (there will also be one above you to the left). This can be obtained by moving over so the drills destroy the “platform” and it then drops down. If you are quick enough, you can just jump on top of it as it drops down and then jump to the side of the ledge. Otherwise, use Lightning Web to create a wall to jump off of or Kuuenbu to double jump to it.
Military Train stage
You really can’t miss this one unless you choose to. Just go through the level and it will be on top of one of the train cars in area two of the stage. If you destroy the cars with the ride armor, the heart tank will still be there, but on a lowered platform.
Snow Base stage
This one only requires that you have either Rising Fire (X) or Ryuenjin (Zero). Play through the stage as you usually would until you reach the part where ice ladders and platforms start materializing. After dropping down the first part and destroying the yeti, look up and you should see a block of ice protruding from the “ceiling”. Simply use your fire based attack to destroy it and obtain the heart tank. (This is very early in the level. It only takes a few seconds to reach the point that contains the heart tank, so don’t go too far and miss it).
Armors
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
Like other games in the series, X has available armor pieces that upgrade each of his body parts. There are four pieces total, and they are scattered throughout the initial eight levels of the game. There are no available armors for Zero however, and you have to rely on powerups obtained by defeating bosses to enhance his abilities. Locations of armors and descriptions are listed below.
